The embrace, built into the frame.

Our Story

The embrace, built into the frame.

AB·BRAHT·CHO  ·  ITALIAN, NOUN  ·  AN EMBRACE

Most homes keep their comfort in two places. In the living room, the pieces chosen for how they look. And somewhere out of sight, in a spare room or a corner no guest will see, the machine that actually eases the ache: the bulky massage chair, kept hidden because no one wants it on display.

For years, the chair we admired and the chair that cared for us lived in separate rooms.

Abbraccio began as a refusal to keep choosing.

Our name is Italian for "embrace," and we take it at its word. A frame of layered birch curves around you from armrest to runner. Rollers settle into your neck, your shoulders, your back. Warmth follows. For twenty minutes, the day releases its hold.

Switched off, it is a rocking chair worthy of any room. Switched on, it holds you.

Nookrest is the first piece to carry our name. What follows, in furniture and in massage, will carry the same conviction: that caring for yourself, and for the people you love, belongs in plain sight.

From our founder

Why I started Abbraccio

It is, at its best, something you give to the people who have carried more than their share.

I  ·  The reward

I grew up in a home that took health seriously. My parents taught me that long before it was fashionable, and it has stayed with me ever since.

I live a full, active life, and for years my favorite reward after a long, productive week was a massage. The trouble was the waiting. Between work and everything else, I rarely had the time, so relief came once a week at best, and often less. One evening I asked myself a simple question: what if it didn't have to wait? What if the end of every day could feel like that?

II  ·  The search

I went looking for the chair that could do it. I found plenty that worked, and not one I wanted to live with. Bulky, loud, built like equipment. As someone who cares deeply about how a home looks and feels, I couldn't bring one through my door.

So I stopped searching and started picturing the chair I actually wanted: a rocking chair, with a full massage worked quietly into its frame. Bringing that picture to life took time. But the first time I sat in it, it looked like furniture, and it felt like the end of a long week.

III  ·  The gift

The first one I thought of was for my parents. The years had started to show in their backs, and if anyone deserved to rest well, it was them. So one of the first chairs went home to them, as a gift.

That was when I understood what it could be: not only a reward for yourself, but something you give to the people who have carried more than their share.

IV  ·  The first chairs

Before long, it was finding its way into other homes too, one of several things we offered before Abbraccio had a name. People bought it, lived with it, and kept telling us so.

It deserved more than a place among other things. So we refined it, and built a company around it: one devoted entirely to furniture and massage pieces made to be kept in plain sight.

V  ·  The rocking chair

I chose a rocking chair, not a static one, because rocking chairs have always belonged to our families. Our grandparents rocked in them by the window at the end of long afternoons. It is part of how we rest, part of our culture. It felt right to begin there.

Above all, I wanted it to feel like being held. Like an embrace. In Italian, abbraccio.

This is the chair I wanted for myself and for the people I love. I hope it finds its way to yours.

Our mission

To give rest a place of honor in the home, in pieces chosen for their presence long before they are ever switched on.

Our vision

Every home with one chair that takes care of the people in it.

What we believe

Four things we hold to

The principles behind every decision we make, from the materials we choose to the promises we keep.

  1. 01

    Form first

A chair must earn its place in the room with the power off. Everything else follows.

  2. 02

    Honest by design

We tell you what the chair does, what it is made of, and when it will arrive. Nothing inflated, nothing buried in fine print.

  3. 03

    Rest without ritual

Rest should not require a booking, a drive, or a free afternoon. Twenty unhurried minutes at home are enough, in the right chair.

  4. 04

    Made to be lived with

Real birch, layered and bent to keep its curve through years of rocking. We choose what endures over what merely photographs well.
